Research project “Companies’ Social Relations as a Component of Local Business Strategies: Innovative Integration Strategies of Finnish and Russian Companies” explores the entry and business strategies of Finnish companies in the changing Russian business environment. This three-year-project (2007-2009) is funded by the Academy of Finland and the Russian Foundation for Humanities. It’s jointly implemented by HSE Center for Markets in Transition (coordinator), the University of Joensuu and the Higher School of Economics (Moscow).

The project’s objective is to define:

  • How do Finnish and Russian companies in Russia act in relation to their stakeholder groups?
  • What kind of institutional pressures guide Finnish and Russian enterprises’ decision making?
  • Do the integration and adaptation strategies of Russian and Finnish firms differ from each other?

The project comprises four separate subprojects:

  1. Business establishment strategies of Outokumpu and Norilsk Nickel (post-doc- research, Dr. Vesa Rautio, CEMAT)
  2. Globalisation of the forest industry: The case of Stora Enso in Russia (post-doc-research, Dr. Juha Kotilainen, University of Joensuu)
  3. Welfare provision in Russia: Roles of the public and private sector (doctoral research, M.Sc. Simo Leppänen, CEMAT & University of Joensuu)
  4. Comparison of Finnish and Russian companies’ stakeholder strategies in the Moscow region and the Republic of Karelia (joint research CEMAT/ Dr. Päivi Karhunen and HSE Moscow/Dr. Andrei Yakovlev ja Dr. Victoria Golikova)
