The project "Globalization and International Management: Successful Governance of Intercultural Communication in Finnish-Chinese Business Operations" explores the intercultural Finnish-Chinese business communication from the perspectives of both Finnish and Chinese actors. This three-year project (2008-2010) is funded by the Academy of Finland and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS). The project is led by Professor Riitta Kosonen (CEMAT) and jointly implemented by the Center for Markets in Transition (CEMAT) at the Aalto University School of Economics, former the Helsinki School of Economics (HSE), University of Jyväskylä and CASS Institute of Finance and Trade Economics (IFTE).

The objective of this study is to define:

  1. What are the main communication-related challenges that Finnish companies face in their business operations in China and, respectively, Chinese companies face in Finland?
  2. What are the main cultural and institutional differences between Finland and China that provide such challenges?
  3. What are the ways in which communication-related problems are successfully solved and/or prevented beforehand?

The project is divided into five separate subprojects:

  1. "Adoption of Human Resource Management Practices in MNC Subsidiaries- the Case of Finnish Companies in China" (Doctoral student Lu Wei, CEMAT)
  2. "Intercultural communication competence in multicultural leadership and teamwork: Finnish and Chinese perspectives" (Doctoral student Leena Luckas supervised by Prof. Liisa Salo-Lee, University of Jyväskylä)
  3. "Business power of colours. Narratives on Chinese and Finnish colour cultures" (Doctoral student Kirsi Kommonen, CEMAT)
  4. "Chinese Investments in the Baltic Sea Region: Challenges of Intercultural business communication" (CEMAT)
  5. "Practice and effects of cross-cultural communication of Chinese companies in Finland and the Nordic countries" (Professor Feng Lei and Associate Professor Xia Xian Liang, IFTE, CASS)
