Master's Admissions

Admission to take the Master's degree only at the Helsinki Business Campus

An applicant who already has an appropriate Bachelor's/Master's degree may apply for a Master's degree program. The appropriate degrees are defined in the Admission Guide. If you know Finnish, please go to the Finnish webpage, even if planning to apply to a Master's degree program taught in English. This site is only for applicants who do not know Finnish.

The Master of Science (Economics and Business Administration) degree is a higher academic degree (second-cycle degree) in Finland and equals to 120 ECTS credits which corresponds to two years of full-time studying. The student may also be assigned supplementary studies (max 60 ECTS credits). Studying towards the Master's degree does not suit to students working full time. Depending on the course, the lectures may be during the daytime or also in the evening.

Helsinki School of Economics (HSE) is merging with the Helsinki University of Technology and the University of Art and Design Helsinki in the beginning of 2010 forming Aalto University. HSE's name will then be Aalto University School of Economics.

Two new degree programs added

Two new degree programs, Creative Sustainability and Strategy, have been added to Master's Admission. For more information on the admission criteria for these programs, please check the admission criteria for 2010.

Degree Programs in English and Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) in 2010

In Master's admissions 2010, it is possible to apply to one or two of the twelve degree programs taught in English: Accounting, Economics, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Information and Service Management, International Business,  International Business Communication, International Design Business Management, Logistics and Service Management, Marketing, Creative Sustainability or Strategy.

In admission groups 2, 3 and 4 the applicant must have taken the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) and obtained at least a minimum score of 550 (Total Score). This applies also to admission group 1 when applying to Accounting or Finance. It is useful to get to know the test structure and practice the test before taking it. More information in the Admission Guide. Please book your test session early enough. The names of the universities where the result is wished to be sent is selected in the test session. Aalto University School of Economics uses HSE's old GMAT Program Code C1N-0J-83 ("MSc Degree Programs"). For GMAT result the unofficial score report, if got from the test organization, is enough by the delivery deadline, but the Official Score Report must come later directly from the test organization.

Language Test requirements in 2010

When applying to English degree programs, a language certificate is needed. Only the following test results and levels are accepted:

  • IELTS, result 6.5
  • Toefl iBT, result 92 (Toefl PBT 580, Toefl CBT 236)
  • Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE), grade A, B or C

IELTS and Toefl certificates are valid for two years, thus the oldest test result which is acceptable in the Master’s admissions of 2010 is the result dated on 31 March 2008. CAE and CPE are valid forever, thus there are no restrictions for the oldest date in them.

A language test is not needed only in the following cases:

  • The applicant has completed a degree in Finnish, Swedish or English at a university or university of applied sciences located in Finland.
  • The applicant has completed a degree in English at a university or university of applied sciences located in the EU or EEA (European Economic Area) country. The language of education being English has to be stated in the diploma, its enclosure, transcript or a separate official document given by the university or university of applied sciences.
  • The applicant has completed a degree in English at a university or university of applied sciences located in the USA, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, Australia or New Zealand.

Aalto University School of Economics does not necessarily expect to get the language test score report from the test organization. For Toefl, the code for Aalto university School of Economics (former Helsinki School of Economics, HSE) is 0636 (Graduate Schools 02), note: the code still has HSE's old name in it (Helsinki School of Economics and Business Administration).
