Mentoring

Mentoring is the transfer and transmission of experience, viewpoints and expertise from one person to another. In Aalto University School of Economics mentoring programme, alumni offer students counseling and support, which guide them when transferring to working life at the end of their studies, and when finding their own areas of expertise and points of interest.

The aim of student mentoring is to develop students’ management of their careers and lives. Development takes place interactively with Schoolof Economics students and alumni. Alumni offer support and guidance to students who wish to develop, in matters concerning such things as moving into the workplace, finding a career, identifying their own areas of competency and general life management. The mentoring programme is free for Schoolf of Economics students and alumni act as mentors without separate remuneration.

Mentoring at the School of Economics is built on a structured and trusting relationship that brings students together with more experienced professionals who offer guidance, support and encouragement aimed at developing the competence and character of the student, actor. Mentors are good listeners, people who care, people who want to help young people bring out strengths that are already there.

The programme

Alumni mentoring for students lasts an academic year. The mentoring programme has three joint occasions, which are attended not only by the mentors and actors, but also by those in School of Economics and the Students’ Union, KY, responsible for mentoring. The purpose of these joint occasions is to offer tools and practical tips to mentoring pairs. Matters dealt with include the commencement of mentoring, varieties of working styles, career management and the end of the mentoring period.

The opening event for mentoring is organized in September, the intermediate event in January and the closing event in May. In between events, each mentor meets with his student on average once a month.
